Descriptions

Descriptions can be written about a person, a place, an event or a thing.

To be successful descriptions need to :

• - have a variety of sentence length with non repetitive beginnings
• - descriptive language
• - paragraphs for each thing - actions, looks, characteristics
• - elaborated ideas and added supporting detail
• - may have an introduction (who and where) and conclusion (personal feeling)
• - correct punctuation
• - correct spelling
• - re-read to check it makes sense

Here is an example of a description about Mr Edgar:

Mr Edgar is a caretaker at Clevedon School.

Mr Edgar looks like a strong muscled man. He has deep wrinkles which show that he has lived a hard working life outside. Mr Edgar has freckles from the sun because he always works hard outdoors. He has a beard that is coloured like salt and pepper and is bristly. His hair is grey and wispy.

Mr Edgar is committed and always makes sure he gets his work done. He is also helpful and respectful of other people. He is a hard worker because he never gives up and he finishes his work to a high standard. He is also a friendly person. He always has a smile on his face and he is happy to retrieve balls from the roof for crying children.
